The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is reported to have painstakingly selected 10 athletes from more than 40 candidates based on sporting skill, verified refugee status, and personal background. These refugees who are now very proud teammates originally hail from four of the world's most troubled hot-spots: Syria, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Democratic Republic of Congo. They were officially announced by the IOC's Executive Board in June.

These firsts and the fun have tended to overshadow the dangers and fears which almost marred the games. Out there in Rio, the violent hoodlums are still in the inner city committing all sorts of crimes. Zika virus is still in the consciousness of all visitors. Then add to that, the very wide and beautiful beaches which are said to be polluted with fecal matter aside from dead bodies which wash up once in a while. The games will come and go no doubt but it is hoped the stiff competitions, the fun, the glitz and the glamour will somehow overshadow all these fears and dangers.
