Nigeria’s Mikel Obi Makes a Mark in Rio Olympics

Reports coming out of Rio Olympics in Brazil indicate that John Mikel Obi is one of only two players at the men’s football tournament of this year’s Olympics with as many as 75 senior caps. The other is South African goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune. That is not all, the 29 –year old midfield maestro has become a real sensation in Brazil. Nigerians remember with nostalgia how he won his first senior cap for Nigeria in a friendly against Libya in Tripoli on 17th August 2005. The following year, the newly discovered football sensation scored a brilliant goal against Zimbabwe at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt when Nigeria won bronze in the competition. Among his many achievements so far, the Chelsea FC star was key for Nigeria as the Super Eagles won the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

                                                        Captain Team Nigeria Mikel Obi

Many Nigerians now liken Mikel to Argentine football star Lionel Messi whom he has competed against in many encounters. In Rio Olympics, Mikel wears many caps. Nigeria’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has already named him Captain of Team Nigeria to the Games. He is also the captain of the football team, as well as captain of the Super Eagles. Great achievements no doubt, by this young Nigerian football star!
