It is no longer news that at the end of Rio 2016 Olympics, the United States came tops with a medal count of 121 medals. Considering the value of each Gold medal, is safe to say that the US made a fortune at the Olympics in Rio 2016.

Official records coming out of Rio Olympics indicate that each medal weighs about 500 grams - or just more than 1 pound. If that roughly equates $600 value for a pound of gold, it seems exceedingly low. Here is why. The gold medal is made mostly of silver.

Brazil’s federal government website dedicated to the games says the Rio 2016 Gold medal consists of 494 grams of sterling silver. The remaining 6 grams is made up of 99.9 percent pure gold. Taking into account the daily price fluctuations in the prices of precious metals, the real value of each Gold medal comes to around $550. That appears to be about right for the basic smelt value of Gold. When you factor in the $25,000 cash bonus the U.S. Olympic Committee provides to athletes for each Gold medal won, you can then have a very rough idea the amount of fortune the United States is hauling home from Rio 2016 Olympics.
