Threats to Fish Farming Culture

Whole fresh fish on ice.
A Timeline of U.S. and World Aquaculture indicates that the multimillion-dollar fish farming industry began, no doubt, with the very best intentions (like feeding people), but as with arguably every other global enterprise, problems occur (and continue to occur) that are as varied and unpredictable as your average fishing expedition. Some highlights:

Carp were farmed in China in rice paddies and freshwater ponds as early as 3500 B.C. Egyptian hieroglyphics show tilapia being rounded up into aquacultures, with Japan joining the ranks in 2000 B.C.

The first real fish farming as we know it may date to the 1400s, when Indonesians trapped young milkfish in coastal ponds when the tide was high. True modern-day methods may be traced back to a German farmer who gathered trout eggs, fertilized them, then nurtured the hatched fish to maturity.

Then in 1853, a trout farm in Ohio became the first official fish farm in the U.S., as it was the first to artificially fertilize its fish eggs. The concept grew to similar endeavors in New England in the late 1800s to raise lobsters and flounder, and Idaho for trout in 1909.

Franklin D. Roosevelt even had a farm pond program in which the concept was encouraged and federal subsidies offered for farms willing to build and stock fishponds. Similar operations began in the Caribbean, South America, the Mediterranean, Norway and Scotland by the 1960s and, by 1985, Australia.

No one could have predicted some of the problems: Sea lice caused the collapse of an Irish Sea trout fishery; Alaska banned netpen fish farms, shrimp farms collapsed worldwide due to disease; British Columbia placed a moratorium on new salmon farms to conduct an environmental review; and Canadian researchers procured a patent for transgenic (aka genetically engineered or GE) salmon. And that was just in the 1990s.

How Enthusiasm Helps Your Business

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Have you ever flown on an airplane? Even if you haven’t, you must have seen airplanes flying all over the skies. If you have, have you ever wondered how such a big machine manages to fly in the air so easily? Stop wondering and think about those men with great and unlimited enthusiasm who invented airplanes. Just take a look around you. All those tall buildings, superstructures and wonderful monuments you are seeing were all invented and built with great enthusiasm. In all human endeavors, nothing great ever comes to be without enthusiasm. It takes enthusiasm for the human intellect and resourceful energy to be deployed to productive use.

Even in business, you can’t sell, negotiate nor manage any enterprise successfully without enthusiasm. No matter how great the dream is, no matter how sharp your vision is, without enthusiasm, you can never get off the starting blocks to get things rolling. Anywhere you see great things happening in our universe, you discover there are monomaniacs fired up with enthusiasm who are in the driver’s seat. Yes, there may be problems along the way, yes there may be obstacles and yes there may be outright failures and disappointments but with enthusiasm, successful people manage to stay on course till results are achieved. Fact is, without enthusiasm, the zeal to get things done is not there for you. Therefore, if you want to succeed in that business of yours, just get enthusiastic about it and go for results. With enthusiasm, you can never miss the mark.

Get busy right now because…. “No pains, no gains. To get the prize, you must pay the price."

Positive Effects of Abundant Faith

“Faith can move mountains.” Holy Bible

Here is where you automatically get when you have faith in abundance.

A Positive Mental Attitude: This is an outgrowth of self-worth that will remove all barriers particularly fear from your thought process. A Positive Mental Attitude is a must for human progress. A ceaseless struggle and refusal to quit or accept defeat are all products of Positive Mental Attitude which when applied to any human enterprise leads to abundant and overwhelming benefits.

The Power of Prayer: When everything else has failed, the next thing is to pray. We humans may know a lot but God knows best. Whatever business or enterprise you want to embark on, you must remember to allow God to take control when you as a person must have reached your utmost limit. Involving God helps to inspire confidence, fires-up your imagination and enables you to do what may appear to be above the ordinary.

The Power of Self-suggestion: This is the same thing as “psyching” ones self up before you undertake any venture. At times, it involves even physical audible command to ones self. Boxers and other sports people use it a lot before competitions. Remember Muhammad Ali, “I am the greatest”, “I will whip all comers”, “I am the finest boxer in the world.” All these were statements Ali made in his heyday as a boxer to psyche himself up and to intimidate his opponents.

Self-suggestion helps to place you in a winning mood thereby making you appear unstoppable. It works you up raring to go out there to do as your mind is already keyed up to do. This was the major weapon that Muhammad Ali used in most of the memorable fights he won particularly over those boxers who appeared physically stronger than him. Remember, if you think you can, you can. It works and people make tremendous progress in life with this simple philosophy. It is hinged on belief. That is, faith in self and in God. This is what makes it work. Fear normally creeps in when faith goes out the window.

Having faith that you can achieve an objective gives you the courage to go after that objective. “With faith, all things are possible.” “God never disappoints those who genuinely believe.” That is the power of faith. Dennis Kimbro in his brilliantly written book “Think and Grow Rich, a Black Choice” came to the following conclusion about faith. “The people who really succeed are those who dare to risk, who challenge the status quo and push themselves beyond their normal limits. No person ever fully discovers and develops all the potential within himself until he expresses his faith.”
